The recipe for this South African specialty is adapted from Saveur. You can stay faithful to this original version or modify the ingredients to fit your personal taste, but to qualify as a Gatsby make sure you don't exclude the fries and the hot sauce.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 tbsp canola oil
6 slices bologna
1 (8?) crusty Italian roll, toasted
2 cups cooked thick-cut French fries
1/3 cup ketchup
piri-piri sauce, to taste
1/2 cup shredded iceberg lettuce

Steps:

  • The first step is to prepare bologna. In a 10-inch skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat, and cook the bologna slices on each side for 1-2 minutes until browned.
  • Slice the roll crosswise, arrange the fried bologna on the bottom half, and then cover with the additional toppings of fries, ketchup, piri-piri, and lettuce.
  • Finish by covering with a top half of the roll.
