Total Time 8 hours 50 minutes

Prep Time 15 minutes

Cook Time 35 minutes

Yield 1 French toast casserole

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup brown sugar
½ cup butter
1 (8 ounce) loaf crusty French bread, cut into bite-size pieces, or as needed
2 cups milk
6 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 pinch ground cinnamon, or to taste
1 tablespoon brown sugar, or as needed

Steps:

  • Grease a 9x12-inch baking dish.
  • Stir 1 cup brown sugar and butter together in a saucepan over medium-low heat until butter melts and sugar dissolves into butter, 2 to 4 minutes. Pour into prepared baking dish and spread a 1 1/2- to 2-inch layer of bread pieces over the top.
  • Beat milk, eggs, and vanilla extract together in a bowl; pour milk mixture over bread into the baking dish and move bread as necessary to ensure all bread is absorbing liquid. Sprinkle cinnamon over the top. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate, 8 hours to overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Remove and discard plastic wrap from baking dish and sprinkle remaining brown sugar over the top of the bread mixture.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until browned and bubbling, about 30 minutes.

Total Time 1 hours 15 minutes

Prep Time 15 minutes

Cook Time 1 hours

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 19

For the French Toast:

Butter, for greasing

1

loaf crusty sourdough or French bread

8

whole eggs

2 c.

whole milk

1/2 c.

heavy cream

1/2 c.

sugar

1/2 c.

brown sugar

2 tbsp.

vanilla extract

For the Topping:

1/2 c.

flour

1/2 c.

firmly packed brown sugar

1 tsp.

cinnamon

1/4 tsp.

salt

Freshly grated nutmeg (optional)

1

stick cold butter, cut into pieces

Warm syrup, for serving

Butter, for serving

1 c.

fresh blueberries, for serving

Steps:

  • For the French toast: Grease the baking pan with butter. Tear the bread into chunks, or cut into cubes, and evenly distribute in the pan. Crack the eggs in a big bowl. Whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla. Pour evenly over the bread. Cover the pan tightly and store in the fridge until needed (overnight preferably). Or you can make it and bake it right away---delicious no matter what! For the topping: Mix the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and some nutmeg in a separate bowl. Stir together using a fork. Add the butter and use a pastry cutter to mix it all together until the mixture resembles fine pebbles. Store in a plastic bag in the fridge. When you're ready to bake the casserole, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Remove the casserole from the fridge and sprinkle the topping over the top. Bake for 45 minutes for a softer, more bread pudding texture or for 1 hour-plus or more for a firmer, crisper texture. Scoop out individual portions. Top with butter, drizzle with warm pancake syrup, and sprinkle with blueberries.

THE BEST FRENCH TOAST RECIPE | FOOD NETWORK KITCHEN | FOOD ...
Our favorite bread for making French toast is pain de mie for its neutral flavor and spongey texture, which helps it absorb the egg mixture without falling apart. It's sometimes hard to find, so you can substitute brioche for a richer and more decadent toast or challah for an all-purpose choice. Many French toast recipes call for stale bread, but we lightly toast fresh bread slices in the oven instead. We like a slightly longer soak time on the bread to give it a more custard-like texture. If you like your French toast on the drier side, cut the soak time down to 30 seconds per side.

  • 1. Make the French Toast Sticks: Cut the loaf into inch-thick slices, then cut each slice into inch-thick strips (3 or 4 strips per slice). 2. In a large, shallow container, whisk the milk with the eggs, sugar, salt, cinnamon and vanilla extract to combine. 3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Working in batches, dip each stick of bread fully into the egg mixture to coat all sides. Hold it, submerged, in the mixture for 30 seconds, then remove and shake off excess. Cook the sticks in the skillet until golden on all sides, 1 to 2 minutes per side. 4. Make the Honey-Vanilla Syrup: In a small pot, heat the honey, agave, vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons water over medium heat until warm and fluid, 3 to 4 minutes. 5. Serve the French toast sticks warm, with the honey-vanilla syrup on the side for dipping. If using, sprinkle the finished French toast with confectioners' sugar just before serving.
