This recipe has been handed down at least 4 generations that I know of. It is made often because the ingredients are almost always on hand.

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup(s) butter or butter flavored shortening
1 cup(s) sugar
1 - egg
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) vanilla or almond extract
2 1/2 cup(s) flour

Steps:

  • Cream sugar, eggs, butter and vanilla. Add flour mix well. Roll out on lightly floured surface and cut into rectangles or use a shortbread mold. Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
  • I use this the basis for many variations. Sometimes I add nuts. Sometime chopped cranberries or grated orange or lemon peel.
