Indian Tacos with Yeast Fry Bread Recipe | Allrecipes image

My cousins grew up on a reservation in South Dakota, and this is how we always made our fry bread (with yeast).

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
1 tablespoon white sugar
¼ cup warm water
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup warm water
6 cups vegetable oil for frying
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, minced
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
1 teaspoon dried basil
½ teaspoon dried oregano
salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 pinch chili powder, or to taste
½ pound Cheddar cheese, coarsely shredded
1 head iceberg lettuce, cored and shredded
1 cup finely chopped onion, or as desired
1 cup finely chopped mild green chiles, or as desired

Steps:

  • Mix yeast, sugar, and 1/4 cup warm water in a large mixing bowl and set aside until the yeast mixture forms a creamy foam layer on top, about 5 minutes. Whisk flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and baking powder in a bowl. Stir flour mixture into yeast mixture by thirds, alternating with 1 cup warm water in thirds, and beat to make a firm dough.
  • Cut the dough into 6 pieces and roll each piece into a ball on a floured work surface. Roll out the dough balls into flat round tortillas.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Gently place tortillas, one at a time, into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides, turning once, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels and set aside.
  • Cook and stir ground beef with 1 large minced onion in a skillet over medium heat until the meat is browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes. Drain excess grease and stir in diced tomatoes with their juice, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, black pepper, and chili powder. Bring the chili to a boil and reduce heat to low; simmer until thickened, 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Place a piece of fry bread onto a plate and ladle a generous portion of chili onto the bread. Transfer Cheddar cheese, lettuce, 1 cup finely chopped onion, and mild green chilies into separate bowls and top each portion with about 1 tablespoon of Cheddar cheese and desired amounts of lettuce, onion, and chilies.

Easy to make homemade donuts using your bread machine.

Number Of Ingredients 10

2/3 cups milk slightly warmed
1/4 cup water room temperature
1/4 cup butter soft (room temperature)
1 egg slightly beaten
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp salt
3 cups bread machine flour
2 1/2 tsp bread machine yeast
1 quart oil for deep frying
1/4 cup confectioners sugar (optional)

Steps:

  • Place milk, water, butter, egg, sugar, salt, flour and yeast into bread machine pan in exact order listed. Do not stir!
  • Insert baking pan securely into baking unit, close lid, select dough setting and push start.
  • When cycle is complete, remove dough from pan and transfer to lightly floured surface.
  • Using rolling pin lightly dusted with flour, roll dough to ½ inch thickness.
  • Cut with floured dusted donut cutter or circle cookie cutter.
  • Transfer donuts to baking sheet that has been covered with wax paper. Place another layer of wax paper on top, then cover with clean tea towel. Let rise 30-40 minutes until slightly raised.
  • While donuts are rising heat vegetable oil to 375º (190ºCº) in deep fryer or large heavy pot.
  • Fry donuts 2-3 at a time until golden brown on both sides. About 3 minutes.
  • Drain on paper towel.
  • Sprinkle with granulated or confectioners sugar

The secret to perfect pan pizza is pressing the dough into a well-oiled pan (Pizza Hut uses soybean oil), then the pan is covered and the dough rises in a heated cabinet for 45 to 60 minutes. When the dough is topped, the edge is sprayed with a butter-flavored “food release” and the pie is baked at 500 degrees F until perfectly browned on top. You can use a 9-inch, 12-inch, or 15-inch deep dish pizza pan or cake pan for this recipe, and you’ll want to preheat your oven with a pizza stone in it to simulate the type of oven used at the chain. I even tried rising the dough slowly in the refrigerator for various lengths of time as long as up to four days. But after a month of testing and about 30 pan pizzas later, I found the best dough to be straight bread flour, and to let the dough rise at room temperature.
