Molasses Date Cookies – Can't Stay Out of the Kitchen image

Molasses Date Cookies are wonderful for holiday baking. These scrumptious cookies are filled with molasses and dates and are rich and sweet. This vintage recipe will have your family and friends wondering why you haven't made these amazing cookies for the holidays before! Every mouthwatering bite is guaranteed to please. You may find you want to make these cookies more often then just for the holidays!

2/3 cup Crisco shortening (no substitutes)
1 1/2 cups brown sugar (packed)
1 cup white sugar
1 large egg (beaten)
1/2 cup Grandma’s molasses
1 tsp. vanilla extract
4 to 4 1/2 cups UNBLEACHED all-purpose flour ((Bleached flour toughens baked goods))
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. sea salt
1 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
2/3 cup sour milk (or buttermilk (add 1 ½ tbsp. white vinegar to 2/3 cup milk and let stand for 5-10 minutes))
3 cups chopped dates

Steps:

  • Cream shortening, sugars, egg, molasses, vanilla, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, ground cloves and soured milk.
  • Stir in flour and dates with a wooden spoon.
  • Scoop cookie dough with a small cookie scoop and place onto greased baking sheets or baking sheets sprayed with cooking spray.
  • Bake at 375° for 10-12 minutes, or until done.
  • Rotate cookie sheets on racks every eight minutes while baking. Yield: 5-6 dozen cookies.

These cookies are so good, they are made by two generations and eaten by three. AKA Brown Sugar Drops

Total Time 18 minutes

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 8 minutes

Yield 3-5 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 cups chopped dates
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup nuts
1 cup shortening
3 1/2 cups flour
2 cups brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup buttermilk

Steps:

  • Mix all filling ingredients (except nuts) together over medium heat. Add nuts -- stirring constantly.
  • Once sugars are disolved and mixed with other ingredients, take off heat and let cool.
  • Mix shortening, sugar and eggs thoroughly. Stir in buttermilk. Sift in flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Let chill at least 1 hour.
  • Roll dough in ball and make a thumb print in center of the cookie. Add approx 1 tsp date filling in the hole, then cover top of filling with a small piece of dough patted down lightly.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

When I was little my mom and I would visit her and as soon as we got there- I would go right to her pantry and stand in front of the cookie jar until she came looking for me and would give me a cookie.
