Steps:
- Place 1/4 cup maple syrup, 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves in a small bowl and whisk to combine.
- Melt 1 tablespoon unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 (8-ounce) ham steak and cook until golden-brown on both sides, 4 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and repeat cooking the remaining ham steak.
- Nestle both ham steaks back in the pan. Pour the maple syrup mixture over the ham and cook, flipping halfway through, until the ham steaks are fully coated in the sticky glaze, 2 to 4 minutes total.

- To assemble the sandwiches, butter both sides of each bread slice. Lay ham and cheese on one slice and cover with the another slice. Trim the crusts off the sides.
- Heat a saute pan over medium-low heat, then fry the sandwiches until the cheese starts to melt and the sandwiches are golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side. You may need to add more butter to the pan.
- Remove the sandwiches to paper towels to drain, let them cool for 1 minute, then cut into quarters diagonally and serve 3 quarters each per serving.
