Although I'm not a venison eater, my family and friends say this melts in your mouth and very flavorful!

Number Of Ingredients 11

1-2 pound(s) venison round steaks
4-5 tablespoon(s) oil ( i use a mix of olive and canola)
2-3 - celery stalks, cut in 1 inch pieces
2-3 - onions, yellow, medium sliced
2-3 clove(s) sliced garlic (to taste)
1 - green bell pepper (or red) sliced
1/2 pound(s) sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup(s) vinegar
3/4 cup(s) wine (any dry that you would drink)
- fresh grated orange zest
- salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Rinse steaks well. Trim and cut into pieces. Heat oil and slightly saute steaks.
  • Place steaks, celery, garlic, and onions to crock pot. Mix water with vingar to make about 1 cup liquid. Pour over meat and vegetables. Cook on low about 4 hours.
  • Mix water and wine and add to pot, along with peppers and mushrooms. Grate some orange zest (about 2-3 tablespoons)into pot. Stir slightly. Cook about another hour or two, until meat is tender and falls apart.
  • Serve with rice, noodles, or just crusty bread and a salad.

This recipe is from a "Calling All Cooks" local phone company cookbook. When I made it I was snowed in and all out of fresh veggies, so instead of the onion and bell pepper, I just added Mexican tomatoes for some flavor.

1 1/2 lbs venison, cubed
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup flour
1 large onion, sliced
1 (1 lb) can tomatoes
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 green pepper, sliced
1 (4 ounce) can mushrooms

Steps:

  • 1. Mix salt and pepper.
  • 2. Coat venison and place in crock pot.
  • 3. Mix other ingredients and cover venison.
  • 4. Cook on Low for 6-7 hours.
  • 5. Serve with rice.

I used to always cut our venison roasts up into cubes and make venison stew until my sister shared this recipe with me! We now have roast once a week. I don't think that you can overcook this. I make French Dips with the leftovers...if there are any! *October 2009--I've recently made a couple of changes to this recipe that I think have made it even better...I started using black coffee instead of water to make a darker, richer gravy. I also now use low sodium Montreal Steak seasoning.
