BASIC EASY FRUIT CRISP RECIPE | SOUTHERN LIVING

Basic Easy Fruit Crisp Recipe | Southern Living image

When we say this dessert is the simplest treat to make, we mean it. This easy fruit crisp can be made all year long. Just substitute in any seasonal fruit to make this dessert one of a kind. Since apples are in peak, we thought it would be the perfect time to make a stunning fruit crisp with freshly picked apples. Granny might have told you that you're the apple of her eye, but in reality, you're probably second to her most adored Apple Crisp. This easy as pie fruit crisp is fool-proof and perfect for beginner bakers. It infuses sweet and tart flavors with a blend of roasted apples and a heavenly crumbly mixture. For an irresistible combination, we suggest using Granny Smith and Gala apples. This quick and indulgent dessert tastes best with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Make this easy Apple Crisp for all of your last-minute holiday gatherings. We stand behind the old saying 'an apple (crisp) a day keeps the doctors away'—we just made a sweet Southern adjustment.

Total Time 1 hours 10 minutes

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 5

8 cups fruit of choice, defrosted and drained
Cooking spray
1/2 pound cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
1 cup granulated sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350`F. Place fruit in a lightly sprayed 9" x 13" baking dish. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a food processor, combine half of the butter pieces, half of the sugar and half of the flour; process until mixture resembles coarse meal. Pour mixture into a large bowl, and repeat process with remaining butter, flour and sugar. Combine mixtures in the bowl and press mixture with your hands to form clumps of dough. Sprinkle dough over fruit in the baking dish, crumbling over fruit in an even layer. Leave some larger pieces with the smaller ones, to make a nice crumbled topping.
  • Place dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until topping is golden brown and lightly crisped, and fruit is hot and bubbly. Cool slightly before serving, and top with ice cream or whipped cream.

Total Time 1 hours 25 minutes

Prep Time 20 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 9

3/4 cup all-purpose flour, (spooned and leveled)
1/4 cup packed light-brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold, cut into small cubes
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (not quick-cooking)
3 pounds apples, such as Empire, Gala, or Braeburn, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch chunks
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Cut butter into flour, using a pastry blender or two knives, until mixture is the texture of coarse meal. Add oats, and use your hands to toss and squeeze mixture until large, moist clumps form. Transfer to freezer to chill while you prepare apples.
  • In another large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Transfer to a shallow 2-quart baking dish, and sprinkle with topping mixture. Place baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet, and bake until golden and bubbling, 55 to 65 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.
