1 pound ground beef
1 can (15 to 16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed tomato soup, undiluted
1 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
12 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, brown beef; drain. Add beans, soup, celery, green pepper, onion, ketchup, brown sugar and seasonings; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Serve on buns.

Here's our attempt at re-creating an open-faced burger we enjoyed in a restaurant. The chili can also be served over hot dogs.

Number Of Ingredients 19

CHILI:
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) beef broth
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
BURGERS:
1 egg
1/2 cup soft bread crumbs
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 pound ground beef
4 hamburger buns
Chopped onion and shredded cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in remaining chili ingredients. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour., In a large bowl, combine the egg, crumbs, salt, cumin and pepper. Crumble beef over mixture; mix well. Shape into four patties. , Grill, covered, over medium heat for 4-5 minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 160° and juices run clear. Serve on buns with chili. Top with onion and cheese. Refrigerate or freeze remaining chili.

Back in the 1950's my Grandma used to take me shopping at Kresge's in South Bend, IN. After looking for all the items on her shopping list we would have a Sloppy Joe at the lunch counter. Almost like a trip to Disneyland to this Indiana farm girl... What a wonder those sandwiches were. They toasted the bun and served them with potato chips & a pickle. We had very little money but we always had enough for our special lunch. Those shopping trips were truly a slice of heaven. When Kresge's closed Mom got the recipe from a friend who had worked there.
