- It took me a long time to learn to like Brussel sprouts. Memories of over-cooked, limp spouts linger in my head. But they don’t have to be that way. Cooked right, Brussels sprouts make a great addition to so many meals. I love to pan roast them so they get nice and caramelized. With a bit of butter, salt and pepper, they are great on there own, but can also be tossed with a bunch of other ingreidents. But before you cook them, you have to clean them. Fortunately cleaning a Brussel sprout is not all that hard. Buying Look for Brussel sprouts that have tight heads; avoid those with loose leaves They should be firm without any soft spots Avoid Brussel sprouts with surface gashes or significant blemishes Cleaning To clean your Brussel sprout, rinse them off in cold water to remove any dust or dirt Using a small knife, take off the tip of the stem and discard it Remove any of the outer leaves that do have blemishes; don’t worry if a few more just happen to fall off Place the cut stem on your cutting board and slice the Brussel sprout in half from top to bottom The route end should still hold the most of the outer leaves together Depending on the size, you may want to cut them in half again, so that you get bit size pieces Now you should be good to go for whatever cooking method you want to use. Cooking Brussel Sprouts in Air Fryer
Follow these notes when cooking sprouts in the air fryer. These will help you make consistent crispy, yet cooked through and tender Brussel sprouts every time.
- Preheat Air Fryer to ensures even cooking from the start. For Ninja foodi fryer, I preheat for 3 minutes.
- Adjust the timings as per quantity of Brussel Sprouts.
- Toss Brussel Sprouts a couple of times for even roasting. To ensure even cooking in Air Fryer, toss Brussel Sprouts a few times. To toss, pause the air fryer, take out and shake basket 1-2 times. Avoid using tongs and those crush cooked sprouts.
- Don't use air fryer rack when roasted Brussel sprouts with balsamic. As sprouts cook, balsamic sitting at the bottom coats the sprouts and infuses in the flavor.
I always first let the brussel sprouts roast with oil and pepper in air fryer until these start getting crispy. Next add balsamic mixture. Toss a few times when cooking with balsamic for more consistent balsamic flavor.
TIP: Cook and serve extra balsamic glaze on the side for extra-special saucy Balsamic Brussel Sprouts. (highly recommended)
Time for Cooking Brussel Sprouts
I use Ninja Foodi Max XL Air Fryer. It takes 20-22 minutes at Air Roast setting to roast crispy and tender brussel sprouts. Time also vary based on quantity of sprouts. e.g. 1 pound sprouts crisp quickly and are ready in 15-18 minutes.

- Cut off the stem end of the Brussels sprouts and remove any yellowing outer leaves. Place the Brussels sprouts into a large, microwave safe mixing bowl and heat in the microwave on high for 3 minutes. Add the olive oil, garlic, mustard, paprika and salt and toss to combine. Allow the sprouts to cool until you can handle them. Skewer 4 to 5 Brussels sprouts onto each metal skewer with the stem ends facing in the same direction, leaving at least 1/2-inch in between each sprout. Place the skewers onto the grill with stem end closest to the flame. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. Turn the skewers over and continue to cook for another 5 minutes.
