Slow-Cooker Golombki Recipe: How to Make It image

I modified my mom's classic Polish dish to fit my hectic life. Instead of boiling the cabbage and then filling it with beef, I just toss the ingredients in the slow cooker. It's much easier and tastes just as delicious. —Mary Walker, Clermont, Florida

1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
1 cup uncooked converted rice
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 jar (24 ounces) meatless spaghetti sauce
2 cans (10-3/4 ounces each) condensed tomato soup, undiluted
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 medium head cabbage, chopped

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; crumble beef; drain. Stir in the rice, salt and pepper. In a large bowl, combine the spaghetti sauce, soup, water and sugar., In a 5-qt. slow cooker, layer a third of the sauce, half of the beef mixture and a third of the cabbage. Repeat layers; top with remaining sauce and cabbage., Cook, covered, on low until cabbage and rice are tender, 6-8 hours.

Number Of Ingredients 16

1/2 cup tomato sauce
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 small onion, chopped
1/3 cup crushed saltines (about 10 crackers)
3/4 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/8 teaspoon seasoned pepper
1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef (90% lean)
1/2 pound reduced-fat bulk pork sausage
SAUCE:
1/2 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons brown sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground mustard
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • Cut three 25x3-in. strips of heavy-duty foil; crisscross so they resemble spokes of a wheel. Place strips on the bottom and up the sides of a 4- or 5-qt. slow cooker. Coat strips with cooking spray., In a large bowl, combine the first 9 ingredients. Crumble beef and sausage over mixture and mix lightly but thoroughly (mixture will be moist). Shape into a loaf. Place meat loaf in the center of the strips., In a small bowl, combine all sauce ingredients. Spoon over meat loaf. Cover and cook on low 3-4 hours or until no pink remains and a thermometer reads 160°. Using foil strips as handles, remove the meat loaf to a platter.
