CAMPING DUMP CAKE I | JUST A PINCH RECIPES
This is an old recipe used at Church Camps, Scouts and by Families who camp a lot. It is sure to bring back lots of fun memories from camping! We like to sit around the campfire telling stories and singing songs while waiting for this to cook. You can get creative by changing the cake mix flavors, the fruits, and the pop flavors! (Cherry Cola is great with the chocolate cake!). Play With Your Food! xo

Steps:
- Put cake mix into a bowl. Add can of pop. Stir (don't beat), until batter is formed (don't over stir... you want the bubbles from the pop to help the cake rise!)
- Line a Dutch oven with a disposable aluminum foil round cake pan or just line the Dutch oven with foil. Butter the pan or foil.
- Dump the canned pie filling over the bottom of the Dutch oven.
- Pour the batter over the fruit. Put lid on Dutch oven.
- Set the Dutch oven on 8 to 10 coals. Put 10 to 15 coals on the lid. Let cook 45 to 55 minutes. Brush the coals and coal dust off the lid before opening.
- *** For a richer dessert, you can add 1 stick of butter or margarine cut in small pieces and scattered over the top of the batter. *** Let cool a little before serving. *** If you have ice cream or whipped cream available, put a scoop on the top or the side. *** You can use one flavor of fruit or two kinds of fruit...it is great either way!

This is the cake my husband's mother would make for him every July on their family camping trips which was also his birthday. He and his siblings LOVED it. It has a secret ingredient..dates! Makes it moist and toffee-like and you have NO idea they are in there. There are similar recipes on here, but none just like this showstopper. I recently got the recipe from my sister in law Deb and she said "I know for a fact none of the other sibs knew there were consuming dates-sweet irony." I told my hubby, "your favorite childhood cake has dates in it." He said "No way, there is no dates in it." Too funny. Made for a recent family dinner...my son scarfed down 3 pieces and of course, neither child tasted the dates..the next generation is hooked! Great with vanilla ice cream.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 325.
- Pour hot water over dates and soda.
- Cream butter and sugar.
- Add dates, eggs, flour, salt, cocoa, and vanilla.
- Beat well.
- Add 1 cup chocolate chips and nuts.
- Pour into greased 9x13 pan.
- Sprinkle more chocolate chips on top.
- Bake 25-35 minutes, uncovered.
