Bratwurst Burgers with Braised Onions Recipe: How to Make It image

This burger is a fun mashup of a bratwurst with onion and peppers, chicken-fried steak and a beef burger. The best of three dishes, bratwurst burgers are guaranteed to be family-pleasing. —Priscilla Yee, Concord, California

1 tablespoon canola oil
1 large onion, sliced
1 medium sweet red pepper, sliced
1 medium sweet yellow pepper, sliced
1 cup dark beer or chicken broth
BURGERS:
1/2 pound ground beef
1/2 pound uncooked bratwurst links, casings removed
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon 2% milk
3/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
4 slices Muenster cheese
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
8 teaspoons spicy brown mustard

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and peppers; cook and stir 5 minutes. Stir in beer. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, until vegetables are tender and liquid is almost evaporated, 15-20 minutes. Remove and keep warm., In a small bowl, combine beef and bratwurst, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Shape into four 3/4-in.-thick patties., In a shallow bowl, mix egg and milk. Place bread crumbs in a separate shallow bowl. Dip patties in egg mixture, then roll in crumb mixture to coat., In the same skillet over medium heat, cook burgers until a thermometer reads 160° for medium doneness and juices run clear, 3-4 minutes on each side; top with cheese during the last 1-2 minutes of cooking. Serve burgers on buns with mustard and onion mixture.

Just in time for cookout season. Great for crowds. The sauce keeps picnic grub hot, juicy and ready-to-eat. I used this amount (with only 1/2 stick margarine) for 14 hamburgers and warmed them in a 13 x 9 pan. Poured liquid over, covered with foil and steamed on stove until hot. Burgers were moist and tasty. The onions were good on the meat.

1 (12 ounce) can beer
1/8 lb margarine
1 large onion, cut up in chunks

Steps:

  • Bring to boil: one 12 ounce can of beer, 1/8 lb. margarine and one large onion cut up in chunks.
  • Add the meat then to keep it warm. If you have cold meat, you can simmer it in this to warm it up again.

Shape the brat mixture into 4 equally sized patties, about 4" wide.  Brush the onion rounds with oil and season with salt and pepper.  Heat a grill or grill pan to medium and oil the grates. Grill the patties and onions until a crust develops on the patties and they're no longer pink and the onions are lightly charred and crisp tender, about 6 minutes per side for each. Remove from the grill to a plate. Arrange the lettuce on the bottom buns. Top each with a patty and drizzle the patty with the mustard. Pile the onions and kraut on top and sandwich with the top buns. Serve hot.
