Bratwurst Burgers with Braised Onions Recipe: How to Make It image

This burger is a fun mashup of a bratwurst with onion and peppers, chicken-fried steak and a beef burger. The best of three dishes, bratwurst burgers are guaranteed to be family-pleasing. —Priscilla Yee, Concord, California

1 tablespoon canola oil
1 large onion, sliced
1 medium sweet red pepper, sliced
1 medium sweet yellow pepper, sliced
1 cup dark beer or chicken broth
BURGERS:
1/2 pound ground beef
1/2 pound uncooked bratwurst links, casings removed
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon 2% milk
3/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
4 slices Muenster cheese
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
8 teaspoons spicy brown mustard

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and peppers; cook and stir 5 minutes. Stir in beer. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, until vegetables are tender and liquid is almost evaporated, 15-20 minutes. Remove and keep warm., In a small bowl, combine beef and bratwurst, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Shape into four 3/4-in.-thick patties., In a shallow bowl, mix egg and milk. Place bread crumbs in a separate shallow bowl. Dip patties in egg mixture, then roll in crumb mixture to coat., In the same skillet over medium heat, cook burgers until a thermometer reads 160° for medium doneness and juices run clear, 3-4 minutes on each side; top with cheese during the last 1-2 minutes of cooking. Serve burgers on buns with mustard and onion mixture.

ground pork

2 tbsp.

French’s Classic Yellow Mustard

3/4 tsp.

garlic powder

3/4 tsp.

ground white pepper

3/4 tsp.

dried marjoram

1/2 tsp.

caraway seed

1/4 tsp.

ground nutmeg

1/4 tsp.

ground ginger

Kosher salt

1

medium yellow onion, sliced crosswise into ½-inch rounds

Canola oil, for brushing

Freshly ground black pepper

4

pretzel-style or brioche hamburger buns, split

4

leaves green leaf lettuce

1 c.

sauerkraut

2 tbsp.

French’s Classic Yellow Mustard

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix the pork with the mustard, mustard, garlic powder, white pepper, marjoram, caraway, nutmeg, ginger, and 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt until well combined. Shape the brat mixture into 4 equally sized patties, about 4" wide.  Brush the onion rounds with oil and season with salt and pepper.  Heat a grill or grill pan to medium and oil the grates. Grill the patties and onions until a crust develops on the patties and they're no longer pink and the onions are lightly charred and crisp tender, about 6 minutes per side for each. Remove from the grill to a plate. Arrange the lettuce on the bottom buns. Top each with a patty and drizzle the patty with the mustard. Pile the onions and kraut on top and sandwich with the top buns. Serve hot.

OWENS SAUSAGE AND GROUND BEEF BACKYARD BURGERS RECIPE ...
This recipe was included in an ad in my local paper. It sounded so good that we had to try it. We used Owens rolled sausage since I had the coupon. It was great, but I'm sure other sausage brands would work too! The recipe originally said to make 8 patties, but they ended up so small that I decided next time I will make 6 larger patties. We used regular flavored sausage, but my husband and I love spicy food, so I can't wait to try this recipe using hot flavored sausage. Be sure to have all your favorite burger toppings on hand like lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, etc.**Update - made these patties for the 4th of July and used 96/4 extra lean hamburger since the sausage is so "fatty". Doubled the recipe and made 12 patties. They came out just the right size. Huge hit with all the guests! Many tried to guess the "secret ingredient" and were amazed when I told them it was breakfast sausage mixed with the beef.
