Easy Traditional Boilo Recipe – HowtoMoonshine image

I love to keep traditions alive. It’s even better when those traditions involve alcohol of any kind. Try this basic boilo recipe for your next holiday party, or add your own flair and flavour and give it as a gift to friends and family.

Provided by Craftstills

Total Time 4 hours 10 minutes

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 4 hours

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 oranges
4 lemons
2 cups of honey
2 cinnamon sticks
1 small box (snack size) of raisins
1 tsp caraway seeds
1 tsp whole allspice berries
12 whole cloves
1 litre ginger ale, orange/apple juice or water (your choice)
750 ml Four Queens Whiskey (or any other cheap, blended whiskey)
750 ml moonshine

Steps:

  • Cut the oranges and lemons into quarters. Squeeze the quarters to release the juices into a crock pot or large pot on the stove, and then throw the fruit (peel and all) in as well. Add the liquid of your choice and remaining ingredients EXCEPT the whiskey.
  • Bring to a boil, stirring frequently, and then lower heat and let simmer for four hours.
  • Strain the fruit and mulling spices from the rest of the liquid.
  • Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature before adding the moonshine and whiskey of your choice.
  • Transfer boilo to mason jars and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Boilo can be served warm or cold, depending on preference.

COAL REGION BOILO – A COALCRACKER IN THE KITCHEN

Coal Region Boilo – A Coalcracker in the Kitchen image

Boilo is an alcoholic beverage consisting of a blend of fruits, sweeteners, spices, and whiskey. It is traditionally served during the winter holiday season in Schuylkill County in the Anthracite Coal Region.

Provided by A Coalcracker in the Kitchen

Categories     Beverage

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 (750 ml) bottle Four Queens whiskey (or any inexpensive blended whiskey)
4 whole oranges
4 whole lemons
2 cups of honey
2 cinnamon sticks
2 Tablespoons dark raisins
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
12 whole cloves
1 liter ginger ale OR orange juice or water (your choice)

Steps:

  • Cut the whole oranges and lemons into quarters. Squeeze the pieces to release the juice then add the unpeeled squeezed fruit to the pot. Add the ginger ale, orange juice, or water to the pot. Add the remaining ingredients to the pot EXCEPT the whiskey.
  • Bring to boil; reduce heat and slowly simmer, stirring frequently, for about 20 - 25 minutes.
  • Once the fruit is softened and mushed from cooking, strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer to remove the solids and spices. (If strainer is not fine enough to catch spices, use a regular colander lined with several layers of cheesecloth.) Press the pieces of fruit using the back of a spoon in the strainer to remove all the liquid. Discard the remains of the fruit/spices.
  • Allow the mixture to cool slightly (adding alcohol to very hot or boiling liquid will cook off some alcohol thereby defeating the entire purpose of boilo; so, don't boil your boilo!!) Away from heat, add the bottle of whiskey. Stir to blend.
  • Serve boilo warm in shot glasses. Individual servings can be lightly re-warmed in a microwave if not serving immediately.
  • Refrigerate left overs or store in a cool place in a closed container (canning jars are popular).

  • "1. Make this in a crock pot. It's easier than cooking on the stove and much less likely to overcook or scorch. (Although, stovetop is quicker! Direction for stovetop given in (4) note.) 2. Remove zest from oranges and put in pot. Peel the oranges and lemons. Cut up the fruit and squeeze them into the pot. 3. Add everything except the whiskey. Stir. NOTE: do not add whiskey yet! 4. Start the crock pot and let the mixture cook for about 2-4 hours. Stir occasionally. It's complete when the fruit pulp gets cooked down. NOTE: For stove top, bring to slow simmer for 15-20 minutes. Stir frequently and watch for boil over. 5. Strain into a pitcher. Mash down everything in the strainer to get all the liquid. Now add the whiskey to the pitcher and stir. If you cook the whiskey, even for a short time, the alcohol will start to evaporate. 6. Taste, and add more whiskey to your liking. Serve hot in shot glasses, espresso cups, or coffee mugs. After the first round, each individual serving can be heated in the microwave. "
