AUNT MAE'S BLACKBERRY DOOBIE | JUST A PINCH RECIPES

Aunt Mae's Blackberry Doobie | Just A Pinch Recipes image

Now I like the strange and unusual when it comes to things. And when I read this recipe, I had to do a double take cause I was wondering to myself, "What the hell is a blackberry doobie?",lol. But this is another good recipe from Mrs. LaBelle. You can use blueberries or a combo of berries but not strawberries. Plus you can also use frozen berries as well with this recipe.

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 pint(s) fresh blackberries or blueberries
3/4 cup(s) sugar
1/2 cup(s) water
4 tablespoon(s) butter, cut into pieces (1/2 stick)
2 tablespoon(s) cornstarch dissolved in 1/4 cup water
DUMPLINGS
2 cup(s) self rising flour
2 tablespoon(s) sugar
1/2 cup(s) vegetable shortening
2/3 cup(s) milk

Steps:

  • In a deep 12 inch skillet, toss the berries, sugar, water and butter. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring often. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in the dissolved cornstarch and cook until the juices thicken, about 1 minute.
  • Meanwhile, make the dumplings: In a medium bowl, mix the flour and sugar. Add the shortening. Using a fork or a pastry blender, cut the shortening into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Using a fork, stir in the milk. Using a scant tbsp of dough for each dumpling, roll into 24 balls and place on a baking sheet.
  • Drop the dumplings into the simmering berries. Cover tightly and cook until the dumplings are cooked through, about 20 minutes. Serve hot, spooned into individual bowls.

BLACKBERRY DOOBIE | THE SPLENDID TABLE
I call the woods around the farm Where the Wild Things Are, because great-?grandmother Florine’s mimosa trees and great-?grandfather Horace’s blackberries and muscadines have all volunteered and gone a little crazy back in there, where they are free to flourish. As a kid, we had wild blackberries growing along the edges of the ditch when Galilee Road beside our farm was a dirt road. When they were ready for picking, my cousins and I would fill our buckets with more blackberries than Nana could possibly use because we knew if we did, she would say, “Now, y’all done picked enough for to make a doobie.” A doobie is kind of like a cobbler, but it’s more akin to sweet dumplings. Serve warm with fresh whipped cream, vanilla bean ice cream, or a scoop of one of the gelatos. Once you take a bite, you’ll taste summer for real.
