Total Time 60 minutes

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 25 minutes

Yield 11

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound dry black beans
3 ½ cups water
½ onion (chopped)
3 cloves garlic (minced)
½ teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon chili powder
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

Steps:

  • Rinse and pick over dry beans to make sure there aren’t any small pebbles or other debris.
  • Optional: Soak beans by placing beans in a large bowl and filling the bowl with cool, filtered water. Cover the bowl and let it sit at room temperature for 8-12 hours. Then drain and rinse beans.
  • Place black beans (soaked or unsoaked), water, onion, garlic, cumin, chili powder and pepper in Instant Pot. Stir.
  • Close the Instant Pot lid and turn the steam release valve to the sealing position.
  • Set the cook time using the Pressure Cook or Manual button, at high pressure:Unsoaked Beans: 25 minutes for firmer beans or 30 minutes for softer beans.Soaked Beans: 8 minutes for firmer beans or 10 minutes for softer beans.
  • The Instant Pot will take about 10-15 minutes to reach pressure and then the cook time will begin counting down.
  • When the cook time ends, allow the pressure to release naturally for 15 minutes (just leave the Instant Pot alone after the cook time ends).
  • Quick release any remaining pressure by carefully moving the steam release valve to the venting position using the handle of a long spoon. Once all of the steam has escaped and the pin drops down, carefully open the Instant Pot lid.
  • Stir in salt. Serve.

SOUTH YOUR MOUTH: THREE MEAT CROCK POT COWBOY BEANS

South Your Mouth: Three Meat Crock Pot Cowboy Beans image

This slow cooker BBQ bean recipe with smoked sausage, bacon and ground beef is the perfect side dish for feeding a crowd!

Provided by Mandy Rivers | South Your Mouth

Total Time 6 hours 20 minutes

Prep Time 20 minutes

Cook Time 6 hours

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 20-oz. bag Hurst’s 15 Bean Soup dried bean mix
6 cups water
1 large onion, diced
1 pound ground beef
1 pound bacon
2 pounds smoked sausage
1 1/2 cups barbeque sauce
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Steps:

  • Add beans (with seasoning packet) and water to a large crock pot then cook for 4-6 hours on high or until beans are tender.
  • Meanwhile, cook onions with ground beef until beef is cooked through, seasoning with salt and pepper then set aside.
  • Cut bacon into small strips then cook until crispy and browned. Remove bacon from pan drippings then set aside.
  • Cut smoked sausage into bite-sized pieces then set aside.
  • Once beans are tender, ladle out any excess liquid; set aside to use later if needed. Add salt and pepper to taste, barbeque sauce and remaining ingredients, including the ground beef, bacon and smoked sausage. Gently stir to combine.
  • Add reserved liquid from cooking the beans, 1/2 cup at a time, if needed to ensure the contents of the crock pot have a nice, thick sauce. You don’t want things to be runny but you do want to make sure there’s enough sauce to coat everything nicely (such as with baked beans).
  • Continue cooking 1-2 hours on high or until sausage is heated through and everything is hot and bubbly.
