HOW TO MAKE BUBBLES | BUBBLE RECIPES & BUBBLE TRICKS

How To Make Bubbles | Bubble Recipes & Bubble Tricks image

You can blow bubbles with any mixture of soap and water, but add a 'secret' ingredient and you'll get bigger and stronger bubbles!

Total Time 10 minutes

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 10 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 5

Liquid dish soap (Joy or Dawn brands work best. Try to find one that doesn’t say ‘Ultra’)
Distilled water (tap water is okay, but distilled water makes the best bubbles)
Clean container with lid
Glycerin or light corn syrup
Bubble wand or straw

Steps:

  • Measure 6 cups of water into one container, then pour 1 cup of dish soap into the water and slowly stir it until the soap is mixed in. Try not to let foam or bubbles form while you stir.
  • Measure 1 tablespoon of glycerin or 1/4 cup of corn syrup and add it to the container. Stir the solution until it is mixed together.
  • You can use the solution right away, but to make even better bubbles, put the lid on the container and let your super bubble solution sit overnight. (Note: If you used “Ultra” dish soap, double the amount of glycerin or corn syrup.)
  • Dip a bubble wand or straw into the mixture, slowly pull it out, wait a few seconds, and then blow. How big of a bubble can you make? How many bubbles can you make in one breath?

TOP SECRET RECIPES | BIG BOY DOUBLE-DECKER HAMBURGER CLASSIC

Top Secret Recipes | Big Boy Double-Decker Hamburger Classic image

Menu Description: "1/4 pound of 100% pure beef in two patties with American cheese, crisp lettuce and our special sauce on a sesame seed bun." Bob Wian's little ten-stool diner, Bob's Pantry, was in business only a short time in Glendale, California, before establishing a following of regular customers—among them the band members from Chuck Fosters Orchestra. One February night in 1937, the band came by after a gig as they often did to order a round of burgers. In a playful mood, bass player Stewie Strange sat down on a stool and uttered, "How about something different for a change, Bob?" Bob thought it might be funny to play along and serve up Stewie a burger he could barely get his mouth around. So Bob cut a bun into three slices, rather than the usual two, and stacked on two hamburger patties along with lettuce, cheese, and his special sauce. When Stewie tasted the huge sandwich and loved it, every band member wanted his own! Just a few days later, a plump little six-year old named Richard Woodruff came into the diner and charmed Bob into letting him do odd jobs in exchange for a burger or two. He often wore baggie overalls and had an appetite that forced the affectionate nickname "Fat Boy". Bob thought it was the perfect name for his new burger, except the name was already being used as a trademark for another product. So the name of the new burger, along with Bob's booming chain of restaurants, was changed to "Big Boy." The company's tradename Big Boy character is from a cartoonists napkin sketch of "fat boy," little Richard Woodruff. The Big Boy hamburger was the first of the double-decker hamburgers. McDonald's Big Mac, the world's best-known burger that came more than 30 years later, was inspired by Bob Wian's original creation. See if you can get your mouth around it.  Check out my other Big Boy copycat recipes here.  Source: Top Secret Restaurant Recipes by Todd Wilbur.

Delicate sheets of handmade pasta are layered with rich béchamel, savory tomato sauce and creamy ricotta filling, and studded with spinach and herbs, in this deeply comforting lasagna. But if you don’t have the time to make each component or can’t find all of the ingredients, use fresh or dried store-bought noodles and avail yourself of the many suggested substitutions. For a vegan version, use cashew milk and vegan butter to make béchamel, vegan cheese and cashew ricotta for the filling, and make sure to buy dried pasta that does not contain eggs. No matter how you make this dish, you’ll find that it’s grand, comforting and perfect for sharing with whoever is around. (Watch Samin make #TheBigLasagna on YouTube.)

    1. Soak the tapioca in the milk in a saucepan for 1 hour before cooking.
    2. Place the pan over a medium heat and add the vanilla extract, 100g of the caster sugar, clementine zest and a pinch of sea salt.
    3. Gently simmer for 20 minutes, or until softened and thickened. Turn off the heat and allow to cool slightly.
    4. Heat 200ml of water in a saucepan over a low heat. Add the egg yolks and remaining 50g of caster sugar to a heatproof bowl and place over the simmering water.
    5. Whisk the yolks and sugar until thick and light in colour. Remove from the heat and fold through the tapioca.
    6. In a bowl, whisk the double cream until it forms soft peaks and fold through the tapioca mixture. Allow to cool completely in the fridge while you make the rest of the layers.
    7. Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4.
    8. Place the almonds in a colander and rinse under cold water. Drain well, then tip into a bowl with the icing sugar and orange zest, tossing to coat.
    9. Spread over a large lined baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until golden. Allow to cool slightly, then chop into large pieces.
    10. Combine the berries, sugar and a splash of Cointreau in a saucepan. Cook over a low heat for about 10 minutes, or until the berries are lightly cooked but still holding their shape.
    11. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fruit and set aside.
    12. Place the pan of juice over a medium heat and simmer until it has reduced to a light syrup. Set aside to cool.
    13. To make the meringue, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks.
    14. Combine the sugar and 80ml of water in a medium pan, then place on a high heat. Add a sugar thermometer to the pan. Brush the edges of the pan to release excess sugar crystals.
    15. When the temperature reaches 110ºC, turn the heat down to low and heat slowly until the temperature comes back up to 120ºC.
    16. Take the pan off the heat and allow the bubbles to settle (this will take about 20 seconds).
    17. Carefully start pouring the syrup into the egg white, whisking continuously on a low speed. The syrup cooks the egg white so it’s important to pour the syrup in a constant slow stream.
    18. Let the mixer continue for a further 10 minutes on a slow speed. This cools down the egg whites and makes it look thick and glossy.
    19. Just before it’s ready, add a few drops of the pink food colouring (if using) for a pale pink meringue.
    20. Spoon into a piping bag with a 10mm plain nozzle.
    21. Spoon a few berries and a little syrup into the base of the serving dishes. Top the fruit with a layer of cooled tapioca mixture.
    22. Pipe big peaks of meringue around the edges of each dish to create a border, then use a cook’s blowtorch to quickly set and colour it.
    23. Pop some berries in the centre and scatter over the candied almonds and gold leaf (if using).
