Best Sloppy Joe Recipe - Easy Pioneer Woman Sloppy Joes image

These homemade sloppy joes are simple, comforting, and they go well with a big bunch of kettle cooked potato chips for added crunch.

ground beef

1/2

whole large onion, diced

whole large green bell pepper, diced

5

cloves garlic, minced

1 1/2 c.

ketchup

1 c.

water

2 tbsp.

brown sugar

2 tsp.

chili powder (more to taste)

1 tsp.

dry mustard

1/2 tsp.

red pepper flakes (more to taste)

Worcestershire sauce, to taste

2 tbsp.

tomato paste (optional)

Tabasco sauce (optional; to taste)

Salt, to taste

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Kaiser rolls

Butter for rolls

Steps:

  • Add butter to a large skillet or dutch oven over medium high heat. Add ground beef and cook until brown. Drain most of the fat and discard. Add onions, green pepper, and garlic. Cook for a few minutes, or until vegetables begin to get soft.  Add ketchup, brown sugar, chili pepper, dry mustard, and water. Stir to combine and simmer for 15 minutes, adding salt and pepper to taste. Also add tomato paste, Worcestershire, and Tabasco if desired. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.  Spread rolls with butter and brown on a griddle or skillet. Spoon meat mixture over the rolls, topping with a slice of cheese if it makes your skirt fly up. Serve hot with kettle cooked chips!

1.25 lbs 93% lean ground beef sirloin
1 tbsp steak seasoning or seasoned salt
1 carrot (minced)
1 medium onion (minced)
2 cloves garlic (minced)
1/4 cup red bell pepper (minced)
4 oz mushrooms (minced)
1 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 cups tomato sauce
2 tbsp tomato paste

Steps:

  • Chop all the vegetables really fine, using a chopper or food processor.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat.
  • Add the meat to the pan and break it up as it cooks.
  • Season with steak seasoning and cook the meat until it browns.
  • Add onion, garlic, carrots, mushrooms and red peppers to the skillet.
  • Reduce heat to medium and add red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce, cook 5 more minutes.
  • Add tomato sauce and paste to pan, stir to combine.
  • Cover and reduce heat to simmer and cook an additional 5 minutes.
  • Using a measuring cup, pile 1/2 cup of sloppy meat onto toasted buns.

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Place 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet and place over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the carrot, onion and green bell pepper and cook until slightly softened, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 1 more minute. Add the ground beef, breaking up into little pieces with a wooden spoon, and cook until no pink pieces remain, 5-7 minutes. If a lot of liquid or fat remain in the skillet, drain most and discard. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, chili powder, dry mustard, beef stock, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Stir to combine and simmer for 3-5 minutes. Add hot sauce if desired. Transfer the mixture to a 9-by-13-inch casserole dish. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Nestle the slider rolls (tops and bottoms together) into the sloppy joe mixture and brush all over with the melted butter. Sprinkle the tops all over with everything bagel seasoning or sesame seeds. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the tops of the buns are toasty. Serve in serving bowls immediately.
