Some things in life are worth waiting for—and one of those things is cold brew. Once you learn how to make cold brew at home, you'll know just what we mean.

ground coffee

8 qt.

cold water

2 tbsp.

sweetened condensed milk

Half-and-half, for serving

Steps:

  • In a large container, combine 1 pound ground coffee with 8 quarts cold water. 
    Give it a stir to combine, cover, and allow to sit at room temperature for at least 12 hours or overnight.
    Layer a fine-mesh strainer with cheesecloth and place over a separate container. Slowly pour the steeped coffee through the strainer, allowing all the liquid to run through.
    Place the coffee concentrate in the fridge and allow to cool. Fill a glass with ice, then pour in the cold brew concentrate until your glass is three-fourths full.
    Add 2 to 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk (or enough sugar to achieve the level of sweetness you like) and a healthy splash of milk or half-and-half.
    Stir to combine and enjoy!

50g ground coffee (use coarsely ground for cafetières)
ice
sparkling water or still water to dilute

Steps:

  • Put 400ml cold water into a large jug or jar and add the coffee grounds, but do not stir the mixture. Cover and leave to steep for 24hrs.
  • Gently stir the mixture then pour it through a funnel or sieve lined with coffee filter paper (or a sheet of kitchen paper) into another large jug. This concentrate will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days.
  • To serve dilute 1 part cold brew with 2 parts still or sparkling water (or to your taste) and serve with lots of ice.
