Recipe: Best-Ever Challah French Toast - Kitchn image

Challah French toast made with a rich, vanilla-scented custard.

1 (1-pound) loaf challah bread, cut into 1-inch-thick slices (10 to 12 slices)
1 1/2 cups whole milk, heavy cream, or a combination of the two
6 large eggs
2 tablespoons maple syrup, plus more for serving
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat to 300°F.
  • Fit a wire rack inside a rimmed baking sheet. Place the bread in a single layer on the rack. Bake, flipping halfway through, until dry to the touch on both sides, about 15 minutes total. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes. Meanwhile, make the custard.
  • Place the milk or cream, eggs, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon in a quart-sized liquid measuring cup or medium bowl. Whisk until fully combined (no streaks of egg remaining). Pour into a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Add as many slices of challah as can fit in a single layer. Soak, flipping once, until drenched but not falling apart, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Return to wire rack (letting excess drip off into baking sheet) and repeat with remaining challah slices.
  • Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. When the foaming subsides and the butter is sizzling but not brown, add 4 soaked challah slices. Cook until the bottoms are golden-brown and crispy, 3 to 4 minutes. Flip and cook until the second side is browned, about 3 minutes more. Add remaining 1 tablespoon butter to the pan in between batches, swirling as it melts to ensure it doesn’t burn. Serve warm with more maple syrup.

(3.4-oz) box instant vanilla pudding

1 1/2 c.

cold milk

(8-oz.) block cream cheese, softened

1/2 c.

powdered sugar

1 c.

heavy cream

Steps:

  • Finely crush Oreos in a food processor. Add all but ¾ cup to a large bowl. Add melted butter to bowl and stir until mixture starts to hold together. Pour mixture into 9”-x-9” baking dish and pack into an even layer.  In a medium bowl, whisk together pudding mix and milk until thickened, then refrigerate for 10 minutes to firm up.  In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar together until no lumps remain.  In another large bowl, beat cream until stiff peaks form.  Fold pudding into cream cheese mixture, then fold in whipped cream until just combined. Pour mixture over Oreo crust and smooth with an offset spatula. Top with reserved ¾ cup crushed Oreos.  Refrigerate until well chilled, at least 3 hours and up to overnight.

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, garlic and parsley and mix with spatula until just combined. Using your hands, form 4 equally-sized patties; season both sides with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add burgers and cook, 4 to 5 minutes for medium. Flip patties, then immediately pour 2 cups marinara around them in pan. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for another minute, then top each with cheese and pepperoni slices. Cover pan and cook until cheese is melty and burger is cooked to your liking, about 3 minutes more. Meanwhile, make garlic buns. Brush melted butter on inside of each half of the rolls and sprinkle with garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and Parmesan. Bake until golden, about 10 minutes. Spread remaining 1/2 cup marinara on bottom buns followed by cooked burgers and the top bun halves.
