These full-flavored sandwiches really hit the spot after a busy day. They're easy to make and have a fantastic blend of seasonings-no one can eat just one!

1 tablespoon butter
1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean)
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 medium green pepper, chopped
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 tablespoon vinegar
Salt and pepper to taste
Hamburger buns

Steps:

  • In a skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Cook the beef, onion and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add all remaining ingredients except buns. Simmer, uncovered, 15 minutes. Serve on buns.

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 boneless beef chuck roast (3 pounds)
1-1/2 cups ketchup
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon liquid smoke, optional
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
12 sandwich buns, split
Optional: Sliced onions, dill pickles and pickled jalapenos

Steps:

  • Cut roast in half and place in a 3- or 4-qt. slow cooker. In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, liquid smoke if desired, and seasonings. Pour over beef., Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until meat is tender. Remove meat; cool slightly. Skim fat from cooking liquid., Shred beef with 2 forks; return to the slow cooker. Cover and cook for 15 minutes or until heated through. Using a slotted spoon, place 1/2 cup on each bun. Serve with onions, pickles and jalapenos if desired.
    Freeze option: Place individual portions of cooled meat mixture in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Microwave, covered, on high in a microwave-safe dish until heated through, gently stirring and adding a little broth or water if necessary.

Taste it and adjust ingredients however you wish.To assemble, spread dressing on top and bottom buns. Lay on roast beef or ham, then one or two slices of cheese (I cut them to fit the small buns.) If you're using Cheez Whiz, spread a layer on the top bun. Wrap each sandwich in a foil square, and either keep in the fridge or bake right away.
