Scrummy apple strudel in a snap! We love both the technique and flavor found in this sweet recipe. Brew up some coffee and enjoy! This apple strudel recipe is delicious enough to be a savory dessert and filling enough for a breakfast treat.

APPLE FILLING
6 cup(s) apples, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1 cup(s) sugar
1 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
CRUST
3 3/4 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
1 tablespoon(s) sugar
1 1/2 cup(s) shortening
2 - eggs yolks plus water to equal 1 cup, reserve 1 egg white
ICING/FROSTING
1 cup(s) powdered sugar
2 tablespoon(s) milk or light cream (approximately)
1/2 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Mix apple slices, sugar, 1/2 cup flour and 1 tsp cinnamon for the filling. Set aside.
  • Mix the remaining ingredients for pie crust, reserving 1 egg white.
  • Divide dough in two pieces.
  • Roll out 1/2 of the dough to fit a 10x15 inch jelly roll pan with sides.
  • Cover with apple mixture.
  • Roll out top crust. Cover with top crust.
  • Brush top with egg white.
  • Slit crust.
  • Bake at 350 for 45-60 min.
  • For the icing, mix 1 cup powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp vanilla with enough cream or milk to make a thin frosting.
  • Mix well and spread over hot crust.

This is the first on the dessert table to be devoured at any function or festivity! I made this up from a pie I had eaten at a restaurant years ago. This recipe makes two deep dish pies.

2 ounces butter
½ cup packed brown sugar
½ cup all-purpose flour
1 cup chopped pecans
9 apple - peeled, cored and sliced
¼ cup white sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 recipes unbaked pie shells

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 C).
  • Prepare the topping by combining the butter, brown sugar, flour and chopped pecans. Cut in all ingredients with pastry cutter until pea-sized. Set aside
  • Combine the apples, sugar, flour and cinnamon. Toss gently together and set aside.
  • Place apple mixture in unbaked pie shells. Heap the apples up high in each shell and fill completely. Sprinkle topping on top of each.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 50 minutes. Do not allow topping to get too dark.

Posted for ZWT6 for the German region. I found this on an authentic German cooking website. There are two ways to prepare this dish - one is using a canned apple pie filling or the other is using apples you cook yourself. If you cook the apples yourself a day ahead it will make the process of making the strudel much quicker.
